“MENTORSHIP”

1 “You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.”

2 Timothy 2:1-2

Christianity is a faith that involves a lifelong process of learning. Regardless of our age or spiritual maturity, we need someone more experienced than us to guide us in our Christian life. As such, each of us should take the place of a student.

Yesterday, we learned that our intimate moment with God should be the most important part of our day. Here’s another proven way to keep your faith solid:

Be trained by a mentor.

Every believer needs a mentor—typically someone who is just ahead of us in our spiritual journey. This is what we can see from the relationship between Paul and Timothy.

This connection can be seen in three stages: training, shadowing, and partnering. Paul met Timothy in Lystra during his second missionary journey. He recruited him as his accomplice and trained him extensively for years. Then, Paul told Timothy to set the pace for ministry in the church at Ephesus (see 2 Timothy 3:10-11). Finally, Paul considered Timothy a partner in the ministry. Timothy grew from a learner to a trainee, to an accomplice, and now, a co-worker.

Paul encourages Timothy not only to be strengthened himself but also to strengthen others. As the pastor of the church in Ephesus, Timothy is responsible for passing on the teachings he received from Paul, who is leaving this world very soon. 

This is an excellent example of effective mentorship. There was no better way to ensure the survival of Christianity within the oppressive Roman Empire. Just as Jesus guided the Apostles, and the Apostles guided the early Christians, so should we put ourselves under the tutelage of those who have more experience with God and His word. Mentoring involves accountability. Holding ourselves accountable to someone whom we trust will help us reach maturity and full potential.

Faithful, seasoned Christians can help us apply God’s word to specific situations. With many years of personal experience walking with God, they can provide us with helpful insights and biblical wisdom. When we don’t know what to do, a godly mentor can lead us in the right direction.
