“JUST”

18 “Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.”

Isaiah 30:18

People, in general, are commanded to know their Creator. That’s the most basic commandment we can find in the Bible. For the most part, Christians know certain things about God, i.e., His attributes. We know and appreciate His being all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-present. We also believe that God is good, faithful, and loving. But out of the many attributes of God, I think there’s one that we often forget: He is just.

What does this attribute mean, anyway?

God is Just: Definition

The word “just” is defined as “based on or behaving according to what is morally right and fair.” A judge is considered just when he applies appropriate laws in accordance with legal principles, without bias. How does this concept apply to God?

First and foremost, God is just because He made everything. He didn’t have to create, but He did. And all of us fall under the category of His creation. As His mere creatures, we should, by default, be grateful that we were created.

How does the Bible define justice?

The Bible uses the Greek word “dikaiosyne” to define justice. It means “fair and equitable dealing, integrity, virtue, and generosity.” Scripture describes God as the God of justice (Isaiah 30:18).

Today’s verse is a promise of victory to God’s people as long as they obey Him. However, if they choose to go their own way, they will experience overwhelming defeat.

On the basis of creation, all people are considered God’s children. But when it comes to spiritual relationships, only those who come to faith in Christ are regarded as sons and daughters. They are the ones who wait patiently on the Lord and are on the receiving end of His sovereign grace and mercy. He saves them from the evil one. The devil may test them, but they will overcome.

The Bible repeatedly tells us to wait patiently on the Lord, who does not sleep or take His eyes off His beloved. Since He is a just God, He will ensure that justice is served, comforting the oppressed and delivering punishment on the guilty.

So, if you feel like God isn't doing anything to change your situation, rest in the fact that He is good, and in His goodness, He allows certain things to happen to fulfill His greater plan. You may not see that now, but if you trust Him, He will reveal it to you when the time is right.
