“FEAR’S ANTIDOTES”

7 “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

2 Timothy 1:7

Any person can be afraid of something, whether it be a bully, insects, enclosed spaces, heights, public speaking, critics, due dates, the future, or Satan, and the list goes on. What does the Bible say about fear?

Fear keeps you from fulfilling your calling. It takes away your focus, self-confidence, and even trust in God. It creates doubt and makes you question God’s power and love.

In today's verse, Paul writes his letter to his young protégé, Timothy, in the midst of hostility from persecutors and his impending death. He reminds Timothy that God does not give His people a spirit of fear. This word comes from a Greek word that means “timidity, cowardice.” Whether Timothy had this fear out of intimidation from opposition or the fact that he is carrying on the message of a Roman prisoner (Paul), about a despised and crucified Messiah (Jesus), or for whatever reason, Paul tells him that such fear does not come from God and should therefore be rejected.

Paul gives us the antithesis to the spirit of fear.

Power

The word “power” comes from a Greek term from which we get the English word “dynamite.” It means “strength, power, ability.” It is spiritual power coming from God, made available to believers. While it does not allow us to perform the great wonders Jesus did, it does enable us to live a God-honoring life.

Love

The second antidote to fear is love, specifically, a self-sacrificing love that seeks the best in others and takes second place. This love is uniquely Christian, demonstrated by the Lord Jesus on the Cross.

Self-Control (Sound Mind)

Power comes from God; so does love. Self-control is also a gift from God (Galatians 5:23). It is the ability to control oneself in the face of desires, impulses, and emotions. A self-controlled man is reasonable, balanced, and in control of his life. He is self-disciplined, knows his priorities, and is no longer dominated by his sinful desires.

What can we take from this verse?

God does not want you to live in fear. While the world is fearful of many things and is controlled by that fear, you, as a Christian, do not have to. The God who called and saved you is strong enough to help you conquer your fear. He alone can give you these three antidotes to fear. Power, love, and self-control are only available through Him.
