23 "I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me."

John 17:23

Deep down, we all have a built-in longing to be truly seen and accepted for exactly who we are. But in a world where relationships often feel fragile or come with strings attached, finding a place where you are fully known and fully loved can feel like an uphill battle.

We try to fill that empty space with quick fixes—like chasing success or leaning too hard on temporary relationships—but we usually end up feeling lonely and disconnected anyway. The good news is that God offers us a completely different kind of community. It’s a deep, meaningful reality that completely changes how we see ourselves and how we connect with other believers.

John chapter 17 is a heartfelt prayer known as Jesus’ “High Priestly Prayer.” After delivering His Farewell Discourse, Jesus now prays for Himself, the disciples, and future believers. This moment is also the start of Jesus’ “time.” In this series, we will see several important truths relating to our calling, sanctification, and witnessing.

Today’s verse reminds us that when Jesus lives inside our hearts, He helps us grow together in real, noticeable unity. When the world sees that kind of love and togetherness, it shows them just how much the Father incredibly loves every single one of us.

Jesus shows us a beautiful, connected way of living: the Father lives in Jesus, and Jesus lives inside us. This close connection is what truly powers our relationships with one another. When Jesus prays for us to be "perfectly one," He uses a Greek word, teleioo, meaning to bring something to full maturity or its ultimate goal. True unity isn't a fragile human project we have to force through politics or compromises. Instead, it's a supernatural maturity that happens naturally as we let Christ live His life through us every single day. When we lean into His presence, our relationships naturally grow into the deep, mature purpose God always intended for His church.

When different people come together in true harmony, it sends a powerful message to everyone watching. It proves God sent Jesus to earth, and it reveals a mind-blowing truth: God loves you as much as He loves His own perfect Son! When people who doubt faith see us loving each other well, they get a front-row seat to the beautiful love shared by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Because we know God loves us deeply, our challenge this week is to share that same unconditional grace with someone in our church family. If there’s another believer you’ve been bumping heads with or disagreeing with, make a conscious effort to extend a hand of unity and peace.

How does it change things for you to know that God loves you just as much as He loves Jesus? How does that affect how you see yourself and how you treat the people around you today?
