20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word,"

John 17:20

How does a divine message spoken thousands of years ago bridge the immense gap of time to reach our hearts today? We often wonder if we are merely an afterthought in the grand narrative of redemption, disconnected from the original recipients of God's grace. If salvation depends on hearing a message, how can we be certain that the Creator's specific, loving intent extends directly to us in our present generation? Can a prayer offered in the distant past intimately secure our spiritual future?

John chapter 17 is a heartfelt prayer known as Jesus’ “High Priestly Prayer.” After delivering His Farewell Discourse, Jesus now prays for Himself, the disciples, and future believers. This moment is also the start of Jesus’ “time.” In this series, we will see several important truths relating to our calling, sanctification, and witnessing.

In today's text, Jesus expands the horizon of His intercession far beyond the immediate circle of His apostles, lifting His eyes to heaven to pray. Here, the Lord deliberately shifts His focus toward the future, encompassing the entire upcoming church in this solemn High Priestly Prayer. He specifically identifies this future group as those who will believe, translated from the Greek word pisteuo. This term goes beyond simple intellectual agreement; it means placing complete, life-altering trust and reliance on Him for salvation.

Jesus is praying for individuals who will actively receive the truth and entrust their entire lives to His care. He further clarifies that this belief comes through their word, using the Greek preposition dia to indicate the exact channel or means of transmission. The unbroken chain of the gospel is passed down precisely through the faithful testimony of His original followers.

This profound verse shatters the fear that modern believers are somehow disconnected from the early faith. Knowing He would endure the cross, Christ looked across time, fully aware of everyone who would eventually accept the message of reconciliation.

The word of the Lord was destined to be spread to the end of the earth. Jesus knew that the message entrusted to His first disciples would eventually reach us, confirming that our faith is not a modern invention. It is the direct, intended result of the apostles delivering the truth. We are intimately connected to the very moment Jesus prayed because we are the living answer to His request.

Our spiritual security is firmly anchored in the fact that the Son of God personally interceded for us before we even existed. Knowing that Jesus specifically held us in mind and prayer should radically change how we view our place in God's kingdom. We are not an accident or a distant ripple in history; we are the deliberately anticipated fruit of the apostles' word, bound together with the earliest believers by the exact same faith.

How does knowing that Jesus specifically prayed for your future faith change your perspective on your current spiritual standing, and who can you share this word with today to continue that unbroken chain of grace?

Pursue the Savior today!
