19 "And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth."

John 17:19

We often struggle with how flawed individuals can achieve true spiritual purity before a holy God. Many try to become holy through rigorous self-discipline and personal sacrifices, hoping their moral efforts will eventually tip the scales. Yet, our transformation does not depend on our own exhausting attempts, but entirely on a sacred act already performed on our behalf. As the Bible confirms,

10 "We have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."

Hebrews 10:10

John chapter 17 is a heartfelt prayer known as Jesus’ “High Priestly Prayer.” After delivering His Farewell Discourse, Jesus now prays for Himself, the disciples, and future believers. This moment is also the start of Jesus’ “time.” In this series, we will see several important truths relating to our calling, sanctification, and witnessing.

In today's verse, Jesus makes a profound declaration regarding His approaching sacrifice on the cross, revealing the ultimate foundation of our holiness.

In the original Greek text, the exact same fundamental concept is used both when Jesus speaks of consecrating Himself and when He speaks of believers being sanctified or set apart. For the sinless Son of God, consecrating Himself does not mean purifying Himself of any moral stain, because He is already entirely holy. Instead, it means voluntarily setting Himself apart and dedicating His life exclusively as a holy, sacrificial offering to fulfill the Father's redemptive plan. By this prayer, He willingly prepares Himself for the high-priestly act of His atoning self-sacrifice.

Jesus explicitly performs this sacred act "for their sake," showing that His substitutionary self-offering alone is the foundation of our transformation. Because He consecrated Himself unto death, believers are given the internal power to be truly sanctified in truth. We do not generate our own holiness through sheer human effort; our sanctification is the direct, intended result of Christ's completed, sacrificial devotion. When a person is saved by Jesus, they are positionally sanctified, permanently set apart as holy before God, and from that secure standing, they are then called to grow in personal holiness all the days of their lives.

Realizing that Jesus deliberately set Himself apart for the cross specifically for your benefit changes everything about how you approach your faith. Our call to live a holy life isn't an exhausting attempt to earn God's favor, but a loving, wholehearted response to the Savior who gave everything for us. His ultimate sacrifice compels us to yield our own selfish desires and dedicate our lives entirely to His service.

How does knowing that Jesus willingly consecrated Himself unto death for your sake change how you view your own daily commitment to living a set-apart life today?

Pursue the Savior today!
