“WHERE DOES YOUR SECURITY COME FROM?”

10 “All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.”

John 17:10

We spend much of our lives trying to secure what’s ours—our careers, homes, savings, and reputations. We sign contracts, build safety nets, and work hard to ensure that what we’ve built remains protected. Yet, despite our best efforts, life reminds us how quickly our sense of ownership and stability can slip through our fingers.

In John 17:10, Jesus speaks to the Father during His final hours in a way that completely redefines true security and ultimate ownership. To grasp the depth of today's verse's promise, we need to look under the hood at the original Greek language and the ancient culture in which Jesus lived.

Jesus uses the Greek phrase "ta ema panta", which translates to "all things of mine." He doesn't say "a few of my items" or "some of my followers." He claims complete, exhaustive joint-ownership with God Almighty. 

In ancient inheritance law, sharing an identical title with the master of the household meant claiming equal status, equal authority, and shared rights to the entire estate. Consider any high-stakes venture or partnership: when liabilities and assets are fully merged, there is no separation between parties. Jesus tells the Father: "There is no boundary line between what is Mine and what is Yours."

What does this mean for you?

Because you belong to Christ, you belong completely to the Father. You aren't operating on a temporary contract or a conditional trial period. Just as a distinct maker’s mark guarantees authenticity, believers carry the permanent mark of God’s personal possession. When markets swing, plans fail, or life grows uncertain, your underlying value remains unchanged—because your title is held at the highest possible level.

The final clause, " and I am glorified in them," uses the Greek verb "dedoxasmai." It’s written in a tense that signifies a completed action with permanent, lasting results. Jesus isn't saying He "might" be glorified if you have a perfect week. He states that His reputation is already bound up in His people.

When reliable craftsmanship withstands intense pressure, the creator gets the credit. In the same way, when you live with integrity, navigate trials with grace, and care faithfully for those around you, Christ's character is demonstrated directly through your life.

Your ultimate identity isn't tied to a job title, a bank balance, or shifting circumstances. You belong to a covenant that cannot be broken—jointly held by the Father and the Son, and secured for eternity.
